Kalikas Armour operates within culture not as commentary, but as action.
The house is based in the historic INTRA area of Medway and has developed within a place shaped by making, industry, heritage and renewal. For Jatin Patel, fashion does not exist in isolation from the communities, creative networks and wider cultural conditions around it.
Jatin’s perspective is also shaped by his experience as a British designer of South Asian heritage, with Gujarati roots, building an independent creative practice outside London. This informs his commitment to visibility, access and ensuring that creative voices are present in the conversations and decisions that affect them.
CREATIVITY, ACCESS & REPRESENTATION
The pandemic exposed deep structural fragilities across the creative sector. It also made visible who had access to support and influence—and who remained outside those systems.
Independent creatives, freelancers and fashion practitioners were often disconnected from formal cultural structures despite the significant contribution they made to the identity and economy of their communities.
During this period, Jatin became involved in collective work to strengthen Medway’s cultural infrastructure and bring a wider range of creative voices into conversations about culture, education, health, enterprise and regeneration.
CREATIVITY & PLACE
Through Creative Medway and wider cultural partnerships, Jatin has worked to support more inclusive participation, stronger cross-sector relationships and long-term recognition for the creative community.
This work has included involvement with Medway’s High Street Heritage Action Zone Cultural Consortium, which developed into INTRA Trust.
Jatin has also acted as Creative Medway’s representative within Creative Health Medway, helping to connect cultural practice with conversations around health, wellbeing, place and regeneration.
The focus is not simply on creating more activity. It is about helping to build the relationships, confidence and infrastructure that allow creative people and communities to participate, contribute and shape what comes next.
A WIDER CREATIVE PRACTICE
This cultural work is not separate from Kalikas Armour.
The same principles that shape the garments—structure, intention, resilience and transformation—also inform Jatin’s approach to cultural participation and leadership.
The house believes that representation must be visible, that creative voices should be part of the decisions that affect them, and that making can create connection far beyond the object or garment itself.
Creativity builds confidence.
Confidence builds agency.
Agency builds change.
If people can see it, they can be it.
